Music History 3503: Articles

Journals and Magazines for Music Research

Early Music                Leonardo Music Journal           Musical Times

The Boreham Library maintains subscriptions to some print journals, but access to most periodical publications is electronic through databases.  Databases index both popular publications and journals covering all periods and types of music.   An example of a popular music title is Rolling Stone.  Examples of journals  include  Clavier, Early Music, Ethnomusicology, Leonardo Music Journal, and Music Analysis.

Journals are scholarly publications.  Articles published in journals meet exacting requirements and are written by experts in the subject field.  Articles in some journals are referred to as peer reviewed or refereed, as they have also received approval for publication from a review panel of experts for that journal title.

To locate articles, use Databases.  Databases offer the following advantages:

  • Expert indexing
  • Keyword or Subject search options
  • Capabilities to LIMIT or narrow search results to full text, scholarly publications, date range, and format
