Evaluation of Sources

These criteria were developed at the California State University - Chico and are useful for evaluating internet sites.

CURRENCY: The timeliness of the information.

  • When was the site revised and do the links work?

RELEVANCE:  Is the content relevant for the audience and the purpose?.

AUTHORITY: 

  • What are the credentials of the author or source?
  • What type of site is it according to the URL - .edu,   . gov   .com  ?

ACCURACY: 

  • Can the information be verified for accuracy and grammatical correctness?
  • Is the information been peer reviewed?

PURPOSE:  

  • What is the purpose of the information? Is it to inform, teach, sell, persuade, or entertain?
  • Does the point of view appear objective and impartial?
  • Are there political, ideological, cultural, religious, institutional, or personal biases?
