What are Author Processing Charges (APCs)?
Author Processing Charges (APCs) are fees charged by a publisher for making an article Open Access at time of publication. Diamond OA journal do not charge an APC, these journals are typically hosted by a university or society. Gold OA journals do charge an APC and the amount charged by each journal greatly varies. Be sure to look for the publisher's fee structure when choosing a journal, this can often be found of the "information for authors" page.
One tool that can help with choosing a journal to publish in is the Eigenfactor Index of Open Access Fees. The Eigenfactor Index is a tool for comparing scholarly OA journals by assessing APC cost and journal article influence. Be sure to review their information on data sources and methods so you understand how the tool works. Price doesn't equate to prestige, take into consideration the entirety of a journal and not just the cost of the APC when choosing a publication venue.
