When you need current news coverage and commentary using freely available open web sources can be particularly helpful. We have provided a list of some publications and websites useful for research questions relating to sports and politics. Whenever you use open web sources it is important to remember to evaluate the information to ensure it is credible and relevant to your research. If there is bias in the information, you should seek out information that provides the opposing perspective so you have balanced information.
While many websites provide free content, those associated with subscription-based (fee based) magazines will have some restrictions on their content. You should check the University Libraries holdings to see if we provide subscribe to the periodical. If we do not, place an interlibrary loan request for the material.
Runner's World is a consumer (popular) magazine for runners, some articles are freely available on their website in addition to news and other information.
Slate is a daily web-based consumer magazine. Articles provide analysis and commentary on politics, news, business, technology and culture.
Tennis.com provides news, events, analysis and other coverage related to tennis.
ESPN.com provides coverage, news, events, and commentary on amateur, professional and Olympic sports. The University Libraries currently does not have an ESPN magazine subscription, please use Interlibrary Loan to request articles.
The Sports Illustrated website provides news, commentary, podcasts, analysis,and events on a range of sports and professional leagues. Access to Sports Illustrated magazine is limited, please use the University Libraries subscription to read articles.
The Nation provides news, political and social commentary and opinion articles on social issues, economics, politics, arts and more. Some articles are limited to subscription, please access the magazine through the Libraries to read these articles.
Buzzfeed News provides international news coverage on politics, culture, sports, technology and more. There is no search feature embedded into the page.
