Background Information

Background sources are found in books and online sources.  They provide general information about your topic such as an overview, definitions, key terms or persons, and suggestions for more sources.  Sources are often books such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, although they may be websites, articles, and similar tools.   A database with some good background sources is CREDO Reference. 

CREDO is listed in the Database list.

Search Strategy

Start research with a search plan.  Try these steps:

  • Choose keywords that describe your topic or search by Subject for a person or topic. 
  • Decide what kinds of information you need to include  - background information, articles, books, statistics.  Different types of assignments require one or multiple types of information.
  • Start research on your topic by using a "one search" tool like Everything search..  You can also search databases individually.
  • Keep track of references you plan to use in your bibliography by using Zotero or another citation manager.
