Concurrent Student Guide: College Basics

This guide is a great introduction of college basics for concurrent students.

Start Here

Welcome to my college basics page! I'm so excited to share these resources with you.

WHERE TO START

Below I've included an excellent book on college success. I would start there with the chapters that most interest you or applicable to your situation. Before the semester starts, use the checklist and semester at-a-glance worksheets so you are ready for when the semester starts and you have all your class times and assignment due dates on your calendar.

WHICH SKILL DO I START WITH?

Time management, note-taking, college level reading, studying, and how to create goals are important skills you'll need throughout your college experience. I suggest starting with the skill you know you need help with the most then go from there to those skills you have an understanding of but might need to brush up on.

KNOWLEDGE CHECK

After working through the resources on this page, please take a moment to fill out the knowledge check at the bottom of this page. This is a short survey where you will tell me two things you learned from the college basics page and one question you still have after reviewing the materials. Your feedback will help me know what information to keep on this guide and what needs to be added.

Reading, Note-Taking, and Studying Like a College Student

Check out my instructional video on how to read and take notes like a college student.

This short tutorial from Mason Learning Services teaches you how to study using the Stop Light Technique.

Time Management

In this video I think through reasons we procrastinate and how to overcome those hurdles plus strategies on prioritizing all those tasks we encounter in our college journey.

This short Ted Talk identifies reasons we procrastinate and strategies to keep moving forward, plus it's funny!

This video from Jeffrey Smee is a great way to visualize the importance of putting first things first. Keep watching until the end!

SMART Goals

In this tutorial I walk you through how to create a SMART goal and an action plan to complete it. If you don't have a plan, a goal is just a wish.

This short video from Khan Academy summarizes how to create a SMART goal.
